Mitt Romney visits Decker Headquarters

By BILL SHEA, Messenger staff writer

Mitt Romney believes the strength of the United States comes mostly from solid American families.

The Republican who wants to be president shared that belief with a Fort Dodge audience Thursday morning, and explained what he would do to build up families if he wins the White House.

‘‘I don’t think there’s any work that goes on in America that’s more important to our future as a nation than the work that goes on within the four walls of the American home,’’ the former Massachusetts governor said.

‘‘I want to see stronger families in America,’’ he told about 120 people who gathered in a building at the Decker Truck Line Inc. compound to hear him.

His plan to achieve the goal of stronger families includes good schools, health care and a drug-free environment. He didn’t offer any specifics on those topics, however.

Romney said he is concerned about pornography. He said if he becomes president, he’ll ‘‘make sure that every computer has an easy-to-engage filter to stop pornography.’’

He added that he would seek a ‘‘one strike and you’re ours’’ program for sexual predators convicted of preying on children. He said those offenders should be given a very long prison sentence and should be forced to wear an electronic monitoring device for the rest of their life after being released from prison.

He said marriage should be defined as a union between a man and a woman. And, he said, it should come before children.

While much of his speech focused on strengthening families, Romney also summed up the basics of his other plans for the country. They included:

• A line-item veto that would give the president the power to cut more spending;

• Low taxes;

• International trade on a ‘‘fair and level basis;’’

• 100,000 more troops and better equipment for the military;

• Better health care for veterans;

• Beefed up border security;

• Energy independence;

Romney was joined by his son, Josh, at the event.

While in Fort Dodge, Romney rented some locally made transportation. His campaign leased a Born Free Magna van made by Born Free Inc. of Humboldt for the trip to and from Fort Dodge Regional Airport. John Dodgen, president and chairman of Born Free, said he’ll offer to lease the candidate a similar vehicle if he wins the Republican nomination.

Although Romney’s appearance was at Decker Truck Line Inc., the company doesn’t support or endorse any candidate, according to Dale Decker, the firm’s industry and government relations director.
